Software Workshop and Competition
May 28th thru June 4th, 2014

Welcome to the Juniper Networks – Comcast SDN Software Workshop and Competition registration site. You will use this site to qualify and register for the program. All (3) of the participating team members must individually register on this site in order for your team to qualify. Participation in this exciting program is limited to 8 teams, so please register early. REGISTRATION FOR THE EVENT CLOSES ON MAY 16th (or earlier as we have our 8 teams).

The first two days of the event (workshop lectures, training, and prep) will be held for two days (May 28, 29) at the Juniper Networks Westford, MA office (New England Innovation Center). All team members must be present at the facility on these two days. Your team will then work remotely - at your school or elsewhere of your choosing - to solve the Competition problem statement which will be presented to you on the second day of the program. Teams will return to the Westford location on June 4th to present and demo their developed solutions to a panel of judges.

In summary, the entire program agenda will be:

Day 1, May 28th (NEIC, Westford)

  • Program Review, SDN Technology/Market Overviews, Innovation/Entrepreneurship, and Laptop Software Preparation
Day 2, May 29th (NEIC, Westford)
  • Platform Training, Problem Statement Review, Best Practices for Pitches, Lab Access Instructions, Judging Criteria, General Q and A
Days 3 thru 7, May 30th thru June 3rd (Off-premises)
  • Student teams build their application and supporting presentation/demo
Day 8, June 4th (NEIC, Westford)
  • Student Presentations/Demonstrations, Awards and Closing

Please note that you/your team only need to be at the Westford site for May 28, 29, and June 4.

During the program, students will learn about SDN technology and gain insights into the market opportunity and how SDN will impact network architectures and services. Students will build an application using an SDN platform to address a real world networking challenge as defined by Comcast. Students will utilize technical skills in networking and programming as well as their collaboration and presentation skills in competing against the other teams.

As also outlined in the published school flyer, student participants must possess certain pre-requisite skills/knowledge and background course work in order to join the program and effectively learn and compete. These include:

Courses

  • Software Engineering (Software Planning & Design)
  • Data Structures/Intro to Algorithmic Analysis
  • Computer Networks (Understanding of networking)
  • Hands-on course using advanced Java

Experience

  • Hands-on experience with Java coding
  • Small project experience
  • Strong understanding of networking solutions,   devices, protocols, and services
  • Experience with Eclipse IDE and REST programming
  • Familiarity with SDN Protocols (e.g. OpenStack)

Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishing teams in the event. Student teams will be evaluated against various criteria by a panel of Juniper, Comcast, and 3rd party judges.

Student teams will receive a confirmation on their registration as they are received. Student teams will be sent a more detailed confirmation note with additional program logistics and instructions on retrieving and installing the appropriate software on their laptops in preparation for the event during the week of May 19th.

Please take your time as you complete the registration, and make sure that you answer every question, and include ALL information required. At the end of the registration, you will be required to include credit card information which will be used for the $50 registration fee. That fee is FULLY REFUNDABLE when you complete the Workshop and present your solution.
